Chinese date

Red date, or Chinese date, is a unique large shrub reaching a height of 5–10 m, Growth habit is rounded, foliage is glossy green, may turn a nice yellow in fall. Small, yellow flowers are in clusters of 2 to 3 with five inconspicuous yellowish-green petals, emerging from the leaf axils of current season's growth. The fruit is an edible "Chinese date" 1.5–3-cm deep, looks like a small plum, when immature it is smooth-green, with the consistency and taste of an apple, maturing brown to red-black and eventually wrinkled.
